Consett History Society: The Iron Theatre

 The Iron Theatre (interior)

This is a rare photograph of the Iron Theatre's interior. The monochrome grayscale and unusually sharp focus of this shot highlight the striking effect of a metallic auditorium. One of the reasons that Dale decided to focus increasingly on operatic works was due to the highly resonant quality of the metal-plate walls, which were perfect for music. It is thought that, for the more muted acoustic required for drama, heavy velvet curtains were hung from the side walls (the apparent windows on the right of this picture had no glass in them and were a decorative feature).
