 The Iron Theatre: the legacy

Following the death of Sir David Dale in 1906, the theatre fell into disuse without its chief patron to ensure its survival. Within seven years, the theatre had become a ruin and was demolished for scrap in 1913.

However, one unexpected legacy was that its construction had enabled the steelworks to diversify into the area of prefabricated buildings. For many years more, Consett Iron and Steelworks became a major provider of materials for prefabricated buildings of many types: houses, churhes, warehouses, even hospitals (see advertisement below) - but strangely, never theatres!
